COASTAL HIGHWAY ROUTE E-39
By: Kjersti Kvalheim Dunham, Program Manager, Norwegian Public Roads Administration
The current E-39 connects Kristiansand to Trondheim(Norway) with a length of 1100 km including 7 ferry connections. E-39 is connected with ferry to Hirtshals. Then it is connected to Aalborg in Denmark joining E-45 which continues to Italy.
The new route of E-39 will omit ferry connections and will solve the challenging fjords. Construction of the route is well underway. The project is cost efficient with safe and high technology bridges and tunnels. New construction technology is being developed for the whole of Norway and beyond.
The benefits of E-39 will exceed the western regions of Norway. This project is beneficiary for the whole of Norway.
The ongoing investigations include:
• Environmental data
• Ground assessment
• Risk of ship collision
Many companies including More Ocean Lab, Rolls Royce and Avinor can benefit from our efforts. R&D topics of coastal highway route E-39 include:
-Strategies
-Contracts
-Society and financing
-Planning and construction
-Risk management and technical qualification
-Sustainable infrastructure
-Fjord crossings
The E-39 project includes the following sub-projects:
-Submerged floating tube bridge (the invisible bridge-tunnel)
-Bridge foundation on long-span bridge using measured dynamic response
-Bridge foundation on large water depths
-Wind-included response of cable-supported bridges
-Modelling and analysis of damping in extreme bridges.∎
